Laser Control Software & Their Supported File Formats

1. RUIDA RDWorks Software

Primary Use: RDWorks is a free software application that allows users to create, edit, and execute laser engraving and cutting jobs. It is primarily designed for Ruida laser controllers.

Supported Formats:

  • Vector: DXF, AI (older versions), PLT/HPGL, RDW (native)
  • Image: BMP, JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF
  • Other: DST (embroidery), DSB

2. LightBurn Software

Primary Use: LightBurn is a layout, editing, and control software for laser cutter. It supports most Ruida, Trocen, TopWisdom, and GCode based controllers, as well as EZCad-based galvo fiber, CO2, and UV lasers using either EZCad2 or EZCad2-Lite boards.

Supported Formats:

  • Vector: SVG, AI, DXF, PDF, EPS, PLT/HPGL
  • Image: PNG, JPG/JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF
  • Project: LBRN, LBRN2 (LightBurn native)

3. xTool Studio (XCS)

Primary Use:Official software for xTool machines. Directly controls cutting and engraving jobs.

Supported Formats:

  • Vector: SVG, DXF
  • Image: PNG, JPG/JPEG, BMP, GIF, WEBP

4. LaserGRBL (Open-source)

Primary Use: LaserGRBL is one of the Windows software for image Laser Engraving. LaserGRBL is able to load any image, pictures and logo and send to your laser engrave with few click. Unlike other GUI, it is specifically developed for use with hobbist laser cutter and engraver and could be a good free and easy alternative to picengrave, benbox, T2laser, lightburn for who don’t need more then a simple and effective tool.

  • Vector: DXF, SVG
  • Image: BMP, JPG, PNG

5. EZCAD / Epilog Laser Software

Primary Use: EZCAD is a professional laser control software designed for laser engraving and marking machines, while Epilog has its own proprietary software suite, which includes the Epilog Laser Software Suite and a newer application called Epilog Pulse.

Supported Formats:

  • Vector: AI, DXF, PLT
  • Image: BMP, JPG, PNG, TIFF

6. Glowforge App

Primary Use: Cloud-based software for Glowforge lasers. Sends designs directly to the laser cutter.

Supported Formats:

  • Vector: SVG, PDF
  • Image: PNG, JPG

7. Trotec / Ruby Laser Software

Primary Use:  Ruby is a laser software that allows daily work with laser cutters and laser engravers to run seamlessly. It is a simple and quick workflow. It is a web-based and fully digital setup.

Supported Formats:

  • Vector: AI, PDF, DXF, EPS, SVG
  • Image: BMP, JPG, PNG

8. LightObject Laser Software

Primary Use: Supports small business or hobbyist laser cutters. Directly sends DXF, AI, SVG, and image files to the laser.

Supported Formats:

  • Vector: AI, DXF
  • Image: BMP, JPG, PNG

Notes: CDR files are generally not supported directly by laser control software and need to be exported or converted to a compatible format before use. DXF format is the most reliable format for laser cutting and engraving machines.
